In order to find an alternative form of material exchange and decrease ones personal and constant consumption of fabricated goods, I came up with a short and simple booklet to guide users to a more minimal lifestyle.
This alternative form of material exchange guides users through a booklet, which includes sample worksheets to try and start itemizing their possessions. Along with a booklet, there is also a DVD disc with a simple guide on how to use the booklet and tips on itemizing your possessions, and a poster/puzzle.
The booklet starts the reader off by itemizing all their personal possessions and qualifying them using categories like functional, keepsake, extraneous, frivolous, and/or by type. The next step is for readers to categorize everything they will need, and pack it into a 1.0m3 volume. A box of this dimension would be ideal but if you do not have one then use masking tape on the floor and wall to indicate the dimensions.
If one cannot fit all of their items into this volume then they have to release some of them back into the material economy/goods stream, in some form and manner. The user will identify the items and how they plan to release them.
